THE resignation of Muhyiddin Yassin is a big victory for the people but the incoming prime minister must immediately restore the deteriorating condition of the nation, said Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat. The group, which had organised a series of protests against Muhyiddin, also said that a planned protest on August 21 will be cancelled. However, the group sent a message to the incoming prime minister that its #Lawan struggle will not end. “We will not hesitate to take action if the new government fails to perform its responsibilities to keep us safe from the Covid-19 pandemic and any political instability,” the group’s spokesperson, Ashraf Sharafi, said today. “The new prime minister must have the focus, ideas, will and courage to ensure that Malaysians are protected after being oppressed for so long by a government that was busy with politics,” he added. He also said that the legitimacy of the new prime minister should be proven through a vote of confidence in Parliament. He said the concept of using a non-transparent declaration letter to determine who has the majority support disregarded the mandate of the people who elected their constituency MPs. Ashraf said this to reporters after handing over a memorandum at Istana Negara today. “The downfall of Muhyiddin was a victory for Malaysians who held him responsible for the loss of more than 13,000 lives as a result of the failure of his government to curb the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Ashraf. He said that they were cancelling the August 21 street protest now that Muhyiddin has resigned and a new government is to be installed soon. Muhyiddin resigned earlier this week after losing his slim majority in Parliament with the withdrawal of support from 15 Umno lawmakers. As a result, the Perikatan Nasional government also collapsed. However, the pact looks set to return to power with Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the new prime minister. The Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat organised a protest on July 31 at Dataran Merdeka demanding for Muhyiddin’s resignation. Apart from Muhyiddin’s resignation, the activist group wanted Parliament to be reopened and an automatic loan repayment moratorium for all to help ease the economic hardship caused by Covid-19 lockdowns. Prior to this protest, they had organised an in-vehicle protest for people to protest while driving in their vehicles. – August 19, 2021.
