KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia closed on a slightly firmer note on Thursday with trading focus on small capitalised stocks while glove stocks and semicon and tech-related stocks were mixed. Firmer crude oil prices gave Petronas-related stocks a boost. At 5pm, the KLCI was up 1.91 points or 0.12% to 1,584.90. Turnover was 8.04 billion shares valued at RM4.17bil. The broader market was firmer with 626 gainers, 489 losers and 465 counters unchanged. Nearly all key Asian markets closed in the red. China stocks ended lower, paring some of the sharp losses earlier in the session, as worries over signs of liquidity tension ahead of the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday offset continued capital inflows. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.06%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index 0.66%, Singapore’s Straits Times Index 0.75%, South Korea’s Kospi 1.35% and Taiwan’ Composite 0.41%. Glove stocks closed mixed. Hartalega rose 18 sen to RM13.36, Supermax inched up one sen to RM6.79 but Top Glove lost 11 sen to RM6.71. Kossan fell the most, down 13 sen to RM4.19. US light crude oil rose 33 cents to US$56.02 and Brent 26 cents to US$58.72. Petronas Dagangan added 16 sen to RM19.76, Petronas Chemicals 11 sen to RM7.21, Petronas Gas two sen to RM16.30 while Dialog advanced three sen to RM3.05. Among the banks and finance stocks, HLFG ended 76 sen higher at RM17.30, RHB Bank 10 sen to RM5.29, CIMB five sen to RM3.95 and HL Bank four sen to RM17.44 but Maybank ended five sen lower at RM7.89 and Public Bank shed two sen to RM4.08. Semicon and tech-related stocks ended the day mixed, Genetec surged 81 sen to RM3.73 and Unisem added 48 sen to RM8.88 but Pentamaster lost 17 sen to RM6.50, MI 15 sen to RM5.05, MPI 14 sen to RM35.80. Genting rose 10 sen to RM4.17 and GentingM five sen to RM2.51 while IHH added 11 sen to RM5.19 but MISC lost eight sen to RM6.17. As for plantations, PPB Group was up by 18 sen to RM18.78, IOI Corp seven sen to RM4.29, KL Kepong four sen to RM23.80 while Sime Plantation was flat at RM4.97. The most active stock on Bursa was Lambo, which fell 0.5 sen to 2.5 sen with 559 million shares done. Stocks which closed higher were Khind, up 75 sen to RM4.21, See Hup hit limit-up, 48 sen higher to RM2.10, Kobay 40 sen to RM5.29 and MFCB 38 sen to RM7.89.
